What Is Batting Average in Softball?

Batting average is hits divided by at-bats. It's the number everyone knows, and it's usually the first stat a player wants to see. A .300 hitter gets a hit in roughly three of every ten at-bats.

Walks, hit-by-pitches and sacrifice flies are not at-bats, so they don't drag your average down — a walk simply isn't counted either way. That's why on-base percentage exists as a companion stat: it credits you for reaching base without a hit.

Slowpitch batting averages are much higher than baseball averages, and most advice online guesses at what "good" means. The measured aggregate across 7,553 tracked rec-league players is .547 — so in slowpitch, .300 is well below average rather than respectable.
