How AVG is calculated
AVG = Hits ÷ At-BatsBatting average counts only at-bats, so walks, hit-by-pitches and sacrifices are excluded entirely — they neither help nor hurt it. That's why on-base percentage is usually the better measure of a hitter.

- Do walks count against your batting average?
- No. A walk is a plate appearance but not an at-bat, so it isn't counted in either part of the formula.
- Does reaching on an error count as a hit?
- No. It counts as an at-bat and is scored as an out for batting-average purposes, so it lowers your average.
