How SLG is calculated
SLG = Total Bases ÷ At-Bats
Total Bases = 1B + (2 × 2B) + (3 × 3B) + (4 × HR)Slugging percentage divides total bases by at-bats, so a home run counts four times as much as a single. Batting average treats the two identically — which is exactly the blind spot slugging percentage exists to fix.
Because it counts bases rather than hits, SLG can exceed 1.000. Walks and hit-by-pitches aren't at-bats, so they don't affect it in either direction.
