How OPS is calculated
OPS = OBP + SLGOPS is crude by design — it adds two rates with different denominators. It survives because it's easy to compute and tracks run scoring well enough to be useful.
Two hitters can reach the same OPS very differently: one by reaching base constantly without power, the other by hitting for power without reaching base often. The components below tell you which you are.

- The tracked rec-league aggregate is roughly 1.414 — a figure that would be historically great in baseball and is merely average in a rec league. Compare against slowpitch, not MLB.
- Why is slowpitch OPS so much higher than baseball OPS?
- Both components run high: pitches arrive slowly on an arc so strikeouts are rare and contact quality is good, and rec-league defences convert fewer batted balls into outs.
- Is OPS better than batting average?
- For evaluating a hitter, generally yes — it accounts for walks and for extra-base power, both of which batting average ignores completely.
