What Is OPS in Softball?
On-base percentage plus slugging percentage — a single number combining how often you reach base with how hard you hit.
OPS = OBP + SLGOPS is on-base percentage added to slugging percentage. It's crude — it adds two numbers with different denominators, which a statistician would object to — but it correlates well with run scoring and it's easy to compute, which is why it caught on.
The appeal is that it captures both halves of hitting in one figure. A player who reaches base constantly but hits only singles and a player who rarely reaches base but homers often can have similar OPS values, arriving there very differently.
Because both components run high in slowpitch, so does OPS. The tracked rec-league aggregate is roughly 1.414 — a figure that would be historically great in baseball and is merely average in a rec league.
