What Is Runs Batted In in Softball?

You're credited with an RBI when a runner scores because of what you did at the plate — a hit, a sacrifice fly, a walk with the bases loaded, or a ground out that brings a runner home. A home run credits you with every runner on base plus yourself.

RBIs are famously dependent on opportunity. A hitter batting behind teammates who reach base constantly will accumulate RBIs faster than an identical hitter batting behind teammates who don't. That makes RBI a poor measure of individual skill but a useful record of what actually happened.

No RBI is credited when a run scores on an error or on a double play in most rule sets, and never on a strikeout — even a dropped third strike that lets the batter reach.
