What Is Sacrifice Fly in Softball?

A sacrifice fly is credited when you hit a fly ball that's caught for an out and a runner tags up and scores. You're charged with a plate appearance and an RBI, but not an at-bat, so your batting average is unaffected.

The reasoning is that you did the job the situation asked for. Unlike most outs, a sacrifice fly advances the team's position on the scoreboard, so the scoring rules decline to penalise the hitter for it.

Sacrifice flies do count in the on-base percentage denominator, which is a common source of confusion — they're excluded from batting average but included in OBP, so a sacrifice fly lowers your OBP while leaving your average alone.
